Chapter 6

“A day or two ago, I thought I’d take a ride, and soon Miss Fanny Bright— That’s a funny name, isn’t it?” April tossed over her shoulder to where Cole was seated at the kitchen table, carving. “Fanny Bright. It always makes me giggle.”

“Sweetheart,” he commented without looking up, “I’m not even a little bit surprised.”

She knew he was teasing her, by the way his tone was so light, but she didn’t mind. Because although he didn’t understand why Christmas was so important to her, he also hadn’t objected when she’d shown up that night with the little tabletop tree she was now decorating with the tiny bows she’d made.

Besides, she always went all gooey when he called her “Sweetheart.” Or “Christmas” or even “Angel Toots,” because although they’d started out as mocking nicknames, now she heard his smile when he called her those things, and she knew it meant something special to the two of them.

She’d been doing an awful lot of happy sighing lately. Now that the Christmas Village was well underway, she was able to spend more of her time with Cole as they worked on the plans for the contest. But her family had still noticed how happy she was lately, happier than the Christmas season normally made her.

Novel had started taking notes for the romance she was writing, which was annoying, wonderful, but annoying.

From where he was bent over the ornament he was working on, Cole hummed. “You know, you’re the only person who knows the words to the second verse of all these Christmas carols.”

She smiled as she affixed another little bow. “That’s not true; plenty of other people know them. And I can’t seem to keep all the words straight, but I know the tune well enough.”

“That you do,” he hummed.

Turning, she propped her hip against the counter to watch him work. Since he’d begun to help her with this project, he’d been carving every free moment he had. The birds were all completed and packed away to be taken to the town center on Christmas Eve, which was the day for setting-up.

She knew all the drummers and pipers were complete because she’d agreed to stain and varnish them, starting tomorrow, if he hung them all in the workshop behind the main house. The leaping lords were giving him more trouble, but she’d been delighted to see all the different positions he’d found to put them in.

The one he was peering at now, as the wood shavings piled up in the trashcan between his knees, looked like a little man—complete with goggles and swimming trunks—doing a cannonball into a non-existent swimming pool.

Last Sunday, she’d insisted he join the family for dinner. There was always more than enough food, and now he was working for the ranch, he really should get to know everyone. Cole had been a little tight-lipped at first, but April had made it clear to her younger sisters that, as far as she was concerned, he was hers, so amid much teasing, he’d began to loosen up a bit.
